CASE STUDY 2 Case Study What are the causes of stress in Michael’s or Jennifer’s life? How is stress affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s health? The causes of stress in Jennifer’s life are to give her credit, numerous. These stressors include a long commute to and from work, trying to conceive, emotional pain from a recent miscarriage, fear of miscarrying again, pressure from family to conceive, her mother’s death, her father’s deteriorating health, the possibility of having to go against her father’s wishes by placing him in a nursing home, expectations of perfection set upon her by herself and her coworkers, fear of disappointing others, and worrying about not being good enough for her job, husband, potential children, father, and parents-in-law. Jennifer has the added stress of health problems that her physician seems unable to explain. These health issues involve headaches, backaches, and indigestion which seem to be only getting worse with time. Jennifer feels tired and overwhelmed and has begun making mistakes at work and neglecting things at home, which all only adds to her stress. How are these stressors affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s self-concept and self-esteem? These stressors are making Jennifer question her effectiveness and abilities as an employee, wife, daughter, and potential mother. Jennifer is beginning to see herself as not being competent enough to fulfill her duties. She does not understand what is happening to her and she is becoming more stressed out because she thinks there must be something wrong with her, but she and her physician are unable to figure out what the problem could be. Jennifer is beginning to question her own sanity and her ability to cope which plays directly into her sense of self-worth
