EE 3750 — HW 1 solutions 1 EE 3750 — Homework 1 solutions Spring 2004 1. (a) Let the effective address of variable BLUE be 1A0FH and let DS = 8725H. What is the corresponding physical address? (b) Let the physical address of variable GREEN be 480CH and let DS = 308H. What is the corresponding effective address of GREEN? All values are given in hex. (a) DS shifted by 4 bits = 87250 EA = + 1A0F PA = 88C5F (b) PA = 480C DS shifted by 4 bits = 3080 EA = 178C 2. Explain the sequence of operations performed by the 8086 while executing the instruction ADD [SI], CL. (Be sure to include the generation of effective and physical memory addresses and what happens to both the source and destination operands.) The 8086 calculates the 16-bit effective address of the destination, [SI], by taking the contents of SI, then passes this to the bus interface unit (BIU). The BIU shifts the contents of DS to the left by 4 bits then adds it to the effective address to produce the 20-bit physical address. (DS
