CLASS 24 NOTES 11/18/08 Vespasian marched first against Galilee Jotapata (Yodefat) was besieged for 47 days o Josephus captured and taken into custody by Vespasian Vespasian established permanent military bases at Caesarea and Scythopolis/Beth Shean (Gentile) Took Tiberius and attacked Tarichaea (Magdala), on Sea of Galilee At Tarichaea, Roman flotilla chased rebels attempting to escape across sea 6000 captives were shipped to Corinth to work on Isthmian canal Gischala (Gush Halav) surrended after John and his forces fled for Jerusalem by night Gamla in Golan Heights under siege for a month Roman troops broke into town, repelled and captured after fighting According to Josephus, some Jews committed suicide by throwing themselves over steep cliffs on which town was built Nov 67, Vespasian set up winter camp Jewish factions in Jerusalem began fighting with each other In spring 68, Vespasian renews campaign seeking to isolate Jerusalem before besieging Occupied Peraea, took Jericho, Qumran
