Unformatted text preview: CLASS 23 NOTES 11/13/08 • Antonius Felix (52-60 A.D.): known for his 3 marriages, all to members of royal families o One wife: granddaughter of Marc Antony and Cleopatra o 2 nd wife: Drusilla, daughter of Herod Agrippa and sister of Herod Agrippa II Married king of Emesa while still in early teens 14 when Felix was procurator Divorced and married Felix in 54 A.D. • During this time: o Claudius bestowed on Herod Agrippa II the old territories ruled by Herod Philip and Chalus (Lebanon) o Also given oversight of Temple and right to appoint high priests o 54 A.D.: Nero reconfirmed Felix and gave Herod Agrippa II northern territories o Herod faithful vassal of Rome o Tried to prevent outbreak and sided with Romans after it started (Revolt) o Died 92 A.D. • Conditions grew more anarchic under Felix: o Sicarii (sica) “robber…slew men in the daytime, in the midst of the city…” (War 2:254-55) • Messianic and prophetic figures became increasingly common: o Egyptian Jew – destroy Jerusalem while stand on Mount of Olives o Escaped Felix, but followers killed • Class warfare among various levels of priesthood...
