CLASS 20 NOTES 10/30/08 Phasael and Herod – Antipater’s sons 43 B.C.: Antipater murdered Herod became engaged to Mariamne, granddaughter of Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II 42 B.C.: Cassius and Brutus (the assassins of Julius Caesar) were defeated at Philippi by Octavian and Marc Antony o Octavian and Marc Antony take over Rome o Split areas of Rome in half; Octavian gets Western Mediterranean and Marc Antony gets Eastern Mediterranean Marc Antony: o Set up base of operation in Egypt o Met and fell in love with Cleopatra (Ptolemic princess) Herod and Phasael appointed “tetrarchs of Judea” 40 B.C.: Syria and Palestine overrun by the Parthians o Modern Iran and ancient Persia o Mattathias Antigonus took over, captured Hyrcanus II and Phasael o Phasael committed suicide o Josephus War 1.270 o Bit off ears so couldn’t be high priest o Hyrcanus II was taken in captivity to Parthia Herod fled to Idumaea, Masada, Nabataean kingdom o Cypros (Herod’s mother) was Nabataean
