CLASS 18 NOTES 10/23/08 Dead Sea Scrolls cont'd: Qumran occupied from 100 BC - 68 BC by same community that deposited DSS in caves Over 900 scrolls in 11 caves Library of community in Qumran o selection of literature that was included o Jewish religious literature of this period - Hebrew Bible; most are fragmentary except for book of Esther o No personal documents (letters, property deeds) Earliest copies of Hebrew Bible ever found o Were there changes made? Yes and no o No fixed text during time of Jesus; variants of text circulating in population Judaism standardizes Heb Bible after destruction of 2nd temple o Masoretic text (comes from word for tradition) o In Qumran - copies of proto-masoretic texts, other variant texts o Also fragments of Septuagint, no New Testament o Targums (translation of Heb Bible into Aramaic) o Pesharim - commentary on interpretation of book of Hebrew Bible interpreting biblical events in light of current events o Apocrypha - books included in Catholic versions but not in Jew, Protestant
