John conquered Idumaea, Samaria, and territories in Transjordan Idumaea – non-Jewish peoples John destroyed the Samarian temple on Mount Gerizem He forcibly converted the Idumaeans and other non-Jews o Ant 13:257-258 Used Judaism as a way to unify population under rule Antipas: an Idumaean, the grandfather of Herod the Great John Hyrcanus succeeded by son Aristobulus I (104 B.C. – 103 B.C.0 o Had his mother and brothers imprisoned (mom starved to death) and had another brother put to death o Was the first Hasmonean to call himself king o Also a Helleniser, using Greek name instead of Hebrew name (Judah) o Hasmonean kingdom stops fighting against hellenization o Conquered/ Judaized Galilee and the Golan Ituraeans Gailee = not Jewish After Aristobulus I dies (103 B.C.) Salome Alexandra (widow) freed his brothers from captivity and married one of them: Alexander Jannaeus (103 B.C. – 76 B.C.)
