CLASS 12 NOTES 9/23/08 Jerusalem now became a Greek polis and Greek law replaced Jewish law as the law of the land o Writer = anti-Hellenistic, conservative o 2 Macc 4:11-12 Jewish traditions→ nude=bad but Greek culture allowed (gymnasium=school) Many Jews adopted Greek way of life o 2 Macc 4:13-15 “To enroll the men of Jerusalem as citizens of Antioch” – 2 Macc 4:9 o Hellenizers got citizenship o Jerusalem became Greek polis o Jason decided who got citizenship Religious conservatives and Ptolemaic supporters excluded Note: o Initiative from within Jewish community o No reference in 2 Maccabees to opposition o No texts accusing Jason of altering cult in Temple or prohibiting practice of Judaism Jason was high priest from 175 B.C. to 172 B.C. 172 B.C.: Jason sent Menelaus (brother of captain of temple, Simon, who caused trouble for Onias III) to Antiochus IV to make payment Menelaus outbid Jason by 300 talents of silver o 2 Macc 4:24-25 o
