CLASS 8 NOTES 9/11/08 Ptolemaic Palestine: Ptolemy I entered Jerusalem in 301 B.C. on the Sabbath, under the pretense of offering a sacrifice in the Temple o Under rule for about 100 years High Priests: o Jaddua (time of Alexander): last high priest mentioned in Hebrew bible (Neh. 12:22) o Onias I (ca. 323 B.C. - 301 B.C.): wars of succession after Alexander's death o Simon I: time of Ptolemy o Onias II: contemporary of Joseph of Ammon Administration: o Province of Syria: included Jerusalem and Judea o Strategos: head of the civil and military duties/ administration of a province o Toparchy (pl. toparchies): a city that was the seat of the local government and the surrounding territory o Samaritis: toparchy of Samaria, governed from the city of Samaria o Idumaea: toparchy south of Judea, governed from the city of Marisa o Polis (pl poleis): a Greek-style city, such as Akko-Acre (Ptolemais, Straton's Tower (Caesarea), and Gaza) Spread Greek culture - unify people Rebuilt old Greek architecture and institutions
