CLASS 4 NOTES 8/28/08 1. Assyrian Empire fell to Babylonians in 612 B.C. 2. Egypt supported Assyria against Babylon: o Pharaoh sent army to Assyria to help; had to pass through Judea o Josiah came out with forces @ Megiddo; don't know why o If controlled Megiddo, then controlled mountain pass o Josiah killed by Pharaoh Necho o Put an end to thought that Israel and Judea would reunite under Josiah o Megiddo = "the battle at the end of days" = Armageddon (Greek) = Har Megiddo (Hebrew) o 2 Kings 23:29 3. In 586 B.C. the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and destroyed the First Jewish Temple o Account in 2 Kings 28:8 o Sent citizens of Judah into exile in Babylon Destroy local power base so there would be no dissenting groups to overthrow Zedekiah, king of Judah, captured trying to escape from Jerusalem under cover of night Recounted in 2 Kings 25:5-7 4. Babylonian Exile (586 B.C. - 539 B.C.) o Account in Psalm 137, Jeremiah 29:1, 4-6 o Not too bad o Prosperous, wealthy country 5. Elders: Jewish communal leaders in Babylonia
