CLASS 2 NOTES 8/21/08 Who Is A Jew? Today: someone of a specific religion or ethnicity Originally: someone of Judean origin (from area of Judah/Judea) Judea - district (like state) around Jerusalem Under protection of patron god (each city and people)→ Judea's was… GOD OF ISRAEL: the national god of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah What Is A Temple? NOT A SYNOGOUGE House of god→ built temple for them to live in Priests went in and serviced needs of gods Ordinary people gathered around temple but were not allowed in In Jerusalem→ temples must be built on temple mounts Plural - 2 successive Jewish temples o 1st temple (Solomon's temple) : ca. 960 B.C. to 586 B.C. Destroyed by Babylonians o 2nd temple: ca. 516 B.C. to 70 A.D. Destroyed by Romans Differences in Judaism 1. Acknowledged only 1 god (God of Israel) 1. Only 1 temple to god; could only be on temple mount in Jerusalem 1. No physical representation of god; no cult statue Christianity equates religion with faith
