People Mattathias – first member of Hasmonean family to resist Antiochus’s law that all should be one people, was a priest who refused to participate in a pagan sacrifice, killed a Jew who was about to participate in the offering. Him and his sons fled to the mountains where they continued to practice Judaism Judas – Son of Mattathias, takes over for his dad Mattathias where he left off, wins several key battles over the Seleucids, enters Jerusalem and rededicates and rebuilds the temple, celebrates a festival to commemorate the dedication (Hanukkah)
