2 Simulation Worldviews There are 3 “classical” approaches to discrete  event simulation: Ø Event scheduling: e.g., SIGMA Ø Process interaction: e.g., Arena (and all  similar packages) Ø Activity scanning: e.g., Petri Nets

3 Event Scheduling Ø Looks at systems from the perspective of the  events that change the system state Ø Extremely general and flexible – can model  anything Ø Steep learning curve (as you know!) Ø Underlies all other modeling approaches  (deep in the guts of the software package)

4 Process Interaction Ø Looks at systems from the perspective of the  “processes” that occur Ø Very intuitive way of modeling Ø Example: a job’s “process” through the  system  arrive, wait in queue, get served, leave Ø Each job  has its own process Ø Processes interact because they share  resources

5 Process Interaction (cont’d) Ø Key feature: jobs are  active  entities, resources  are  passive  entities Ø Jobs “seize” resources for processing Ø This can cause problems: Simultaneous resource usage   deadlock Artificial congestion for things like PMs or  breakdowns
