So I stepped out of my realm of comfort and attended a seminar about asian fashion and photography. I found it incredibly interesting and informative. I wasn't exactly sure how either could be specific enough to create an academic research paper, however I soon found out. Leslie Kawano was the first speaker to present. Her project was about oriental artistic culture, specifically fashion, and it's recency in the American fashion scene. This apparent prevalence is denoted by the use of embroideries of lotuses, dragons, and the use of kimonos. She honed in on Ralph Lauren's 2011 line and displayed the seemingly asian subtleties that were being used. She then analyzed the work of Alexander Woo, who is an Asian-American. She found it interesting that his work did not utilize asian culture, and in fact he took a very modernized american fashionista approach. In her presentation, she did not speak loud enough and she was reading directly off of her notecards. It seemed a little artificial. However the advice that she gave is
