April 28 Leaf cutter ants o take leaves underground and grow fungus on it o don’t destroy the plants rotate between plants to prevent severe damage o Fungi feed on dead plant material the cuticle on the leaves prevent the fungi to attack it so the ants chew them up to allow access o grow a species of fungi that are only seen in leaf cutter ant nests The ants create an antibiotic that kills all other fungi so only their specific fungus grows o The fungi detoxifies the leaves as it feeds on them o fungi provides food for the ants Army ants o destroy everything on their path don’t have a permanent nest Use their body parts to create a nest for the queen and the young. o Some birds (shrikes: group of birds that eat insects) hang around the ants all the other insects are running from the ants and the birds eat them o some butterflies (clear wings) also hang around the army ants the birds that hang around the ants leave a lot of amino acids and nitrogen in their fesses
