Some of the heat is original heat from the formation of the earth, while the rest is from the decay of radioactive isotopes. Energy for external earth processes such as ocean and atmospheric circulation comes from the heat of the sun, causing hot air to rise and cool air to fall. 2) Volcanoes which create oceanic crust have a lower silica content (usually about 50%), is much more fluid, and may travel long distances before congealing. Volcanic mountain belts above subduction zones erupt Rhyolite and Andesite because they have a silica content over 70%, viscous lava and short, thick flows. 3) One of the major ways rocks beneath the surface of Earth come to the surface is through weathering.
