IRAN AND MEXICO REVIEW MEXICO Porfiro Diaz Dictatorship (1876-1911) Retired Military general, takes presidency in 1876 Dictatorship lasts 34 years Influences of “Porfiriato” Brings stability to country for the first stince since colonial era Authoritarian system- no political power to anyone other than small group of elites Foreign investment and economic growth- cientificos encouraged entrepreneurship and foreign investment = growth of business and industry Growing gap between rich and poor Lazaro Cardenas Chosen by Calles as presidential candidate (1934) Stabilized and radicalized Mexican politics Redistribution of land ejidos: large land grants to peasant groups Encouraged workers to unionize- welcomed input of groups. They formed their own camarillas w/ leaders that represented peasants and workers on the president’s cabinet. Demand higher wages and better working conditions
