IRAN AND MEXICO REVIEW MEXICO Porfiro Diaz Dictatorship (1876-1911) Retired Military general, takes presidency in 1876 Dictatorship lasts 34 years Influences of “Porfiriato” Brings stability to country for the first stince since colonial era Authoritarian system- no political power to anyone other than small group of elites Foreign investment and economic growth- cientificos encouraged entrepreneurship and foreign investment = growth of business and industry Growing gap between rich and poor Lazaro Cardenas Chosen by Calles as presidential candidate (1934) Stabilized and radicalized Mexican politics Gave voice to peasant demands from revolution of 1920 & brought many changes Redistribution of land ejidos: large land grants to peasant groups Encouraged workers to unionize- welcomed input of groups. They formed their own camarillas w/ leaders that represented peasants and workers on the president’s cabinet.
