Chapter 16.1 Coastal System Components I.a. Inputs to coastal environments in addition to pull of gravity (provides potential energy of position for materials in motion and produces tides): I.a.i. Solar energy : drives atmosphere and hydrosphere- conversion of insolation to kinetic energy produces prevailing winds, weather systems, and climate I.a.i. Atmospheric winds : generate ocean currents and waves- key input to coastal environment I.a.i. Climatic regimes : result from insolation and moisture- strongly influences coastal geomorphic processes I.a.i. Nature of coastal rock : (coastal geomorphology) determines rates of erosion and sediment production I.a.i. Human activities I.a. The Coastal Environment and Sea Level I.a.i. Littoral zone : coastal environment, spans some land as well as water (extends landward to highest waterline during storm and seaward to where water is too deep for storm waves to move sediments on seafloor) I.a.i. Shoreline : specific contact line between sea and land, shifts with tides/storms/sea-level adjustments I.a.i. Coast : continues inland from high tide to first major landform change, may include areas considered to be part of coast in local usage I.a.ii. Mean Sea Level (MSL) : value based on average tidal levels recorded hourly at a site over many years I.a. Changes in Sea Level I.a.i. Increase or decrease in quantity of ice in ice sheets of Antarctica
