PM Lecture 10/27 21:25 Movies during the great depression, allowed people to have an escape from the  everyday world.   Sound introduced to film, not accepted at first.  You ain’t heard nothin’ yet, Warner Brothers gave the screen a voice.  Directors had to  change from crank cameras, change lighing, actors are forced to stay close to the  microphone.  Sound man king, cameramen his slaves.   “Wait a minute, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet!” Actors became known for their voices, not just their faces.

Pop Music Lecture 11/1 21:25 Swing Music Brought from African American culture but mainstreamed for pop music Fletcher Henderson – Famous swing arranger Swing – get up and dance music, underlying rhythmic value New York City, Chicago, Kansas City – first three places swing was known to appear The dance that accompanied swing originated in the African American community,  widely imitated and practiced in the cities and on college campuses.   Prohibition was repealed in 1933, adds a little “help” to having fun Place most likely to hear swing music – radio Swing musicians would play at hotels, because they had connections to radio stations.  That was an expensive thing to have.  Swing bands became famous by going to hotels
