ASPH/Pfizer Curriculum Development RFP 2 1.0: Background, Purpose, and Desired Outcomes This request for proposals (RFP), issued by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and Pfizer Inc, seeks to elicit applications to develop a public health course based on the Milestones in Public Health book. 1.1: Background on Milestones in Public Health Pfizer’s Public Health and Policy Group published Milestones in Public Health in 2005. The publication provides an in-depth look at the top public health accomplishments in the U.S. over the last 100 years. Sourced in part from the CDC's " 10 Great Public Health Achievements over the 20th Century " (MMWR, April 1999), Milestones demonstrates how past success in overcoming a public health problem actually redefines the challenge for current and future public health practice. Milestones focuses on 11 public health accomplishments, from reducing addiction to improving motor vehicle safety and environmental health, to the development and mass use of vaccines. Each chapter was reviewed and commented on by nationally recognized experts who also provide exciting "Looking Ahead" commentaries with their vision of the next major challenges in public health. The book, Milestones in Public Health, is available at http://www.pfizerpublichealth.com/publications.aspx 1.2: ASPH and Pfizer Partnership ASPH and Pfizer have held a long-standing partnership that has yielded a variety of programs focused on the development of the public health workforce. This includes initiatives awarding recognition to faculty through the ASPH/Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award (launched in 2005) and the ASPH/Pfizer Early Career in Public Health Teaching Award as well as support for the ASPH/Pfizer Public Health Academy of Distinguished Teachers, the latter two projects of which were created in June 2007. Also, ASPH and Pfizer have worked together to organize a national Milestones in Public Health traveling exhibit that has been displayed at schools of public health and other partners’ sites in 2006 and 2007. In addition, the new ASPH/Pfizer Faculty Award for Excellence in Academic Public Health Practice will be conferred for the first time later this year. The Pfizer partnership with ASPH facilitates school of public health faculty and student
