War stopped November 1918 fighting stopped known as “armistice” war lasted four years -trench warfare WHY DID IT STOP??? - what are the terms of the end of war? - not peace yet. .. fighting came to a stop- Germany agreed to participate in peace treaty with Austria Hungary “rearrange a deal” war- :( - Germany eager for this deal A LOT OF THIS HAS TO DO WITH----> FOURTEEN POINTS - appealing to GErmany- end to war---> get away with heavy reparations? one reason why war stopped. .. “Armistice Day” US--> Veterans Day WWII--> end of fighting in particular day- celebrating all veterans unfortunately--> historical effects of war. .. :( ? forget that has a significant historical circumstance Treaty :( - not in favor--> idea of “self determination”--- not happy - free people independent- XX external influence in choosing government WHY WOULD BE PROBLEMATIC? France and England- vast empires 1917-8 == “empires should not exist any longer” - trying to gain national independence--- Ho Chi Minh- war against French - independence from France - left ashamed attracted to self determination--> principle of sovereignty - US built upon vision of postwar peace

Eng and Fran :( = give up empires - push self determination out of policies Wilson-- England and France - Paris himself- participating in the talks other treaties throughout Europe e.g. Ottoman Empire, Austria Hungary. .. out of terms of treaties - Europe and US Preparing for Peace Wilson- idealist in many ways big mark on history - what peace would look like after WWI League of Nations passed in Treaty- ratified with US Congress- unlikely to be ratified - turned out to be negative result Germany- very much aware of power, despite losing in war - rearm itself and start process all over again, invading neighbors putting blame of war on Germany- yet reality was different all parties- involved in WWI naturalistic, eager to expand empires- arms race, elaborate treaties with one another --- domino effect - blame should be equally given - = Germany rapid build of arms in 1918-- target of the blame Wilson agreed with that---> animosity, reparations too severe----> heavy impact on German eco- nomy & workforce---> taxes through war debts---> German $ :( - Germany vs England Wilson- realized that the rise of Bolshevism---> strong COmmunist party very large Communist group- fear--> communism would succeed in Germany??? Hitler- 1920s---> terms of Versailles Treaty- specifically Anti German - war guilt clause---> tool to rally the poor of the Germans --- Germany betrayed === XXX :( animosity - politically ripening system
