Progressive Era- Imperialism - WWI Political Reform: The Women’s Suffrage Movement resonated for decades to come one of these things---> rise of women’s suffrage - denied from possessing through 19-20 early century - suffrage movements gave women the right to vote generally- Victorian attitudes---> viewed the role of women - traditional attitudes - common throughout West - - idea- that women were supposed to be in domestic sphere = proper domain WWI - conditions of war itself war “total war” --- all participants involved entire societies mobilized in war effort men ---> fought, women---> filled civilian positions aftermath of WWI- women- involved in war, granted right to vote, compensation for effort Victorian attitudes- domestic Darwinian theory- role of women? - - women allowed to go to public sphere-- not good idea. ..? - nothing scientific, evidence to support theory more workers in work force- created greater demand for jobs - certain population- XXX results economic factors---played role. ..? Darwinian attitudes- commonplace feared- demise of American civilization WWI-- > necessity- women filled jobs- took upon that opportunity= proved “we can do these jobs too” - some cases excelled - - LOWER WAGES businessmen- saved on labor saw later on--- 1920s--- more confidence in abilities to earn living
