South- lost properties 3. bitterness 4. end of slavery, talks of secession 5. created a nation 6. technologically advanced and productive economy battles- bloody sheer number of deaths- produced by war- immense incredible chunk of the population South- property damage bitterness on both sides horribly long fought war end of slavery slavery- not central topic of war KEY: keeping the Union intact election of President- secede from the US why withdrew from Union? ? ? answer: desired to keep labor forces Republican- free market labor sell labor- competition for jobs--- wages would adjust HOWEVER---> such system needed slavery gone slavery XXX open market states wanted to have rights to make decisions XXX federal government disjunction between Unionists and South--- fed vs state government- ideological opposition secession illegal
