Chapter 2 Seeing and Thinking Sociologically leading up to discussion of Sociological Theory talking about it- what is it, why is it useful. .. that sort of thing get to that today Society population of people living in the same geographic area who share a culture and a com- mon identity, and whose members fall into the same political authority - 1 geographical area- shared - 2 share a culture and a common identity - 3 fall under same political authority (government) - -- share some form of government Ideal Type---definition (UP) collection of people who live together ideally- society looks like this ideal type---> rarely do people do things- clean and neat way- repeatedly exceptions to definition e.g. US--- sharing to some degree culture and identity--- pattern- vast majority---> Americans to some degree or another keep same culture- complicated - similar vs different --- generally works well. .. but humans are far more complex regardless of the size e.g. hunters and gatherers--- societies even have(had) political authorities Society Influences the Individual: emphasis--- understand the social world- society influences individuals. .. outside sources- impact our lives how does society----> through other individuals---> SOCIAL INFLUENCE - social interaction --- what does this look like? -- behavior on individual level--> context of other people impacted by behavior of surrounding peoples e.g. how did everybody get here at same time? no mechanism to be here at 2 p.m.? why did everybody want to come here simultaneously? REASONS: Motivation, Goal---> end goal - trying to reach there here at 2 p.m.--- you as an individual

not just an individual everybody- different reasons for being here BUT ALL TIED TOGETHER----> STRUCTURE all trying to achieve their own goals---> relatively similar---> behaviors relatively similar
