General Approaches to Social Research Qualitative: research based on non numerical information that describes social life (text, written words, phrases, symbols, observations) how do social scientists work- figure out things like social problems e.g. understanding crime- where it comes from? answer: two major ways (read above) want to understand “how do future traders-- approach jobs everyday” ---> good way to observe future traders- ask them questions. .. e.g. why choose this job - how do they find themselves there know something- but not in numerical form value of. .. Read Above Quantitative: Research based on the collection of numerical data that utilizes precise statistical analysis e.g. how much money make in month/year- survey e.g. how much business do you get everyday? ---> numerical piece of data. .. our government does this- Department of Labor e.g. average income for every occupation ! Even sociologists! * number based research= Quantitative
