6.30.2011 Lecture 5 Explanation/Review of material vs non material culture e.g. material---> physical vs non material---> ideas, values, norms relationship between material and non material -------- FOOD PRODUCTION ideas vs reality ----> farming, natural agricultural vs--->>>> industrial production :( --->> consumers- e.g. want(ed) the white meat (breast, wings) --> drove the process = consumer driven society e.g. why got so fat so quickly-----> CORN!!! - “great miracle product” illustrated the material vs non material reality farm vs industrial factories emphasis on the business---> efficiency “how to create a way to produce a lot of food” - “buy more--- cheaper we can make it”- business oriented - “not about having fun of a family farm” Functionalist-----> whole system----> not interested in individuals - interested in system- how does system work---> “food production”= dangerous “not making all that well”
