1 7/21/2011 Chapter 10 Architecture of Stratification Social Class and Inequality stratification- layers of society --- layers- separate people who have resources/good things in life--- we want to have e.g. property, power, privileges stratification- how we use our resources- filtered down to different groups what stratification is really about Stratification - structured system of ranking entire groups of people that perpetuates unequal rewards and life chances in society diagram of cycle cycle- structured systems---> unequal rewards - what kinds of rewards are we talking about here? - = money $ - = jobs - = education equality in the systems? - only thing excepting to that- small societies- nothing to be had XX inequality - - prestige and status exist every society- stratifying people--> how does society do it? - doing differently ultimately- society good job- upholding system as have been in past --- but some exceptions Different Systems: Slavery- Definition---> ? what sort of system is slave system? - forced free labor - ---> ownership of peoples and their labors - ---> most slave systems - XX harsh e.g. US Caribbean etc. .

2 some flexible- slaves--> earn themselves / work themselves out of it --- owned by another Mobility!!! ---> social mobility, economic mobility up and down the stratification system slave system- XX social mobility e.g. exception--> if there is Caste system---> definition--> ? based on birth no mobility- born into strata of particular society- “nothing you do changes that” Estate- feudal system--> definition---> ? ---> based on ownership of land-- “cranky” resource who owns the land? ----> noble bloodline? --- high in the stratification in particular society social mobility in feudal society? - no :( all three of these cases---> McDonaldization e.g. cashier---> children destiny to be cashiers as well - working hard as you can in that system still exists in some places One More Contemporary Model/System: strata in particular society-----> Classes: magic of it- pot of gold waiting for you-----> mobility is possible in a class system mobility- more than where you are born who do we get pot of gold in rainbow- class society what does it take ---> pot of gold (figuratively) metaphorical pot of gold- class society - means to get the goals - - education, working class-- work--- education---- skills
