Underground vs Independent Chinese voices hearing unmediated Chinese voices- ranging in range of topics 1949-1990 government controls all filmmaking in China no private sector film you saw- produced by the government -- 40 years voice hearing- the voice of the government want the government’s view film media- controlled by the government 1990- cheap new technology- digital and video sector- began to make films do what the state sector couldn’t or wouldn’t do why doing that?- the government already doing alternative voices - views of the people state sector - e.g. pandas and Great Wall part of what these people are doing- confrontation get your attention want to force you to think think about identities- and other subjects = showing what the state won’t show you - alternative want to upset you- confront you---> gets you thinking about things you have not thought before China- more interesting- more recognizable all of the problems mentioned- exist everywhere else human beings key question why is the information so excessive, over the top?
