Communist party= taking power first step real revolution about to begin The Mao Years Catch the Stars and Moon 1949-60 key points. . 1949 China lay devastated civil war foreign invasions previous regime corrupt and incompetent new Communist- pride of prosperity liberation of 1949- historic demarcation old society- ugly things in it after communist- idealistic fight for same cause new China Mao and colleagues vision for change new life for quarter wanted to build strong modern China Communists forged new political structure network of party branches- from capital- different religions different levels- different programs people- master of country enough to wear and eat propaganda- thing of past went far beyond economics- went into politics everything as told- no rights- before Liberation three virtues obedience- father- husband- son no rights at all govt- first legislation women- legally equal to men marriage- parents or matchmakers marry man they loved- very happy work units- employment, medication, housing, house care direct control over people’s lives work units- everybody belonged very uncomfortable- eventually became accustomed

countryside- changes just as profound during revolution- peasant support- better life- given land seize properly from the landlords- fierce- villages- people beating drums dragged to meeting ground- wanted to be beaten exploited people for generations- given house, land, and everything. .. after discussed- enlightened son ofo landform family keep my house- not much left in it. .. I did well many people died encouraged peasants-beat their landlords- violence went much further thousands of landlords were killed half of arable land- poor peasants before land reforms- 3/4 of land not enough to feed during land reforms- 3 acres- grow more gradually- life became better people- masters really liked that land and houses taken saw that they benefited- supported the Communist party worked with Mao for years Lai- loyal servant- never challenged Mao popular and respected. .. Chi- reserved- Communist economic planner Mao party visionary, romantic revolutionary- no theory was sacred strategist China needed international support- 1949 visited Moscow in 1949 Stalin- difficult ally- not acknowledge presence- defense treaty- limited aid returned to Beijing- addressed colleagues establish relations with Russia. .. imperalists invade- friend to help us US not recognize the China two months- war in Korea 1950- North attacked south
