Catch the Stars and Moon 1949-1960 1949 devastated by civil war and foreign invasions previous regime corrupt and incompetent- bankrupt nation people hoped Communist govt- pride, prosperity Wang Roushui revolution- historic demarcation Old Society- many ugly things in it Communist came- idealistic- fight for same cause= New China Mao and colleagues= momentous change- vision transform the lives of 1/4 of mankind strong and industrial China- want to build Communists- forged new political structure set up networks of party branches capital- villages in the country local levels- officials---> party programs Ge Yang equality for everyone- masters of country enough to eat and wear poverty- thing of the past reform- beyond economics Li Xiuying women- no rights before revolution three obediences- father, husband, and son after husband dies no rights at all four virtues first major legislation women=men marriages- parents and matchmakers- stopped women could marry the men they loved---> very happy Communists- work units- housing, health care, and education work units- direct control over peoples lives blue man everyone belonged to work units got used to them gradually changes profound as in countryside peasants- struggled against hardships and poverty during revolution- gave support to Mao- promises of a better life given land... party officials- size property from landlords- peasants Liou Monxiu whole villages- beating drums dragged to meeting ground exploited for generations I will give you everything after they discussed, labeled me enlightened son of landlord kept house, although not a lot of stuff I did well..., many people died officials encouraged peasants to beat their landlords violence went much further hundreds of thousands of landlords were killed nearly half of all arable land- poor peasants Yuanjiu 3/4 of acre of land not enough to feed us all 3 acres of land- grow more gradually- life became better Geyang masters- houses given to peasants saw that they benefited supported the Communist party leaders- veteran revolutionaries Yo Xiao Shi- orthodox Communist, economic planner Lai- foreign minister, gifted administrator, never challenged- human touch, respected Mao- married to former movie actress wife- during 1950s never appeared in public romantic revolutionary- no theory was sacred astute strategist Mao believed- strong international support weeks of taking power in 1949- visited Moscow Joseph Stalin difficult ally did not acknowledge Maos presence agreed to defense treaty- limited aid return to Beijing addressed population establish relations with the Soviet Union, have friend to help us......
