Practice problem Sample essay question: What is the difference between a fact and a theory? How does the theory of evolution help us understand the facts of evolution? Give an example of the role of fact and theory in another scientiFc discipline . A fact is an observation that has been repeatedly conFrmed; a theory is a statement of the principles or causes that explain facts. The theory of evolution helps us understand the processes that are thought to cause the pattern of evolutionary change over time. An example from another Feld: Einstein’s theory of special relativity explains the fact that the speed of light is invariant regardless of the speed of the observer.
