Samantha Zid BWS 151, Dr. Brown Final Exam Essay Tuesday, December 14, 2010 Cultural Backgrounds Diversity within blackness has come to shape cultures around the world. The differences in backgrounds, cultures and identities of displaced Africans around the world are what make the African diaspora so interesting. Within the United States there is an immense amount of diversity within blackness, it is easy to see both the differences and similarities between President Obama and Shirley Chisholm when looking at their backgrounds. These two people have done so much for our country and grew up in extremely similar surroundings. Their childhoods made these two politicians who they are today and helped to influence their politics. Shirley Chisholm and President Barack Obama have both similarities and differences when looking at their cultural upbringing, which has shaped their African diasporic identity, personal politics, and worldview. Both President Obama and Shirley Chisholm have very diverse and multicultural identities. President Obama points out in his speech on race, which he delivered in March of 2008 that “I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins of every
