Cultural Collaboration 15:51 Theatre as Entertainment and Art A lot of people think that theatre is all about entertainment Less social commentary in the Broadway plays Social Functions of Theatre Theatre is a refection of life and social values of a period of time Been apart of society through religion, politics, socialization, subversion, empowerment,  coercion, and cultural exploration The Greeks (origin of theatre) used theatre in their religious ceremonies The Catholic church banned theatre in most regions, actors were considered prostitutes,  then reopened to use to their advantage as “mystery plays” to make messages available  to the masses The book of Mormon, the musical created by South Park Used to teach children various lessons at a young age ex. Schoolhouse Rock British playwright wrote a play about American politics Greek play as a protest to the Tojan War where women told the men that until they quit  fighting there will be no sex Groups who aren’t happy about what is going on and the people who are in power “Hair”: during the Vietnam War anti-draft play, revivals are unsuccessful because people  think of it as hippie or anti-war The Crucible: New England puritans about the witch hunts which translates critiques  against McCarthyism Theatre & Empowerment:
