Bangs Manufacturing International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers requests grievances for the laid off employees of Bangs Manufacturing Company. The company produces heavy equipment used for crushing rock and to pave asphalt. Since the nature of the industry is seasonal, the union fought to ensure its represented employees entered into a contract with the company pertaining to subcontracting. The company normally employed around 850 production and maintenance employees. Traditionally, the company made the pulleys used to support production of the heavy equipment in house. Making and painting these pulleys were the primary jobs for several employees. During the off season a salesman from The Pulley Place made an unsolicited visit to Bangs Manufacturing to show management pulleys that could be bought straight out of a catalog, no specifications were needed.
