Baroreflex Changes in blood pressure are detected by baroreceptors in the aortic arch, aortic sinuses, and carotid sinuses. An increase in blood pressure results in vasodilation and a slowed heart rate and decreased blood pressure. A decrease in blood pressure results in vasoconstriction and an increased heart rate and increased blood pressure. Chemoreflex Chemoreceptors in the aortic bodies and carotid bodies respond to changes in blood chemistry . The primary role of the chemoreflex is to adjust respiration with a secondary role of vasomotion. Hypoxemia , hypercapnia and acidosis sensed by the chemoreceptors cause the vasomotor center of the brain stem to stimulate vasoconstriction which increases blood pressure and increases lung perfusion and gas exchange. Medullary Ischemic Reflex While the baroreflex and chemoreflex are peripheral control mechanisms, the medullary ischemic reflex responds to inadequate perfusion of the brain stem.
