Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) An important parameter of kidney function is the glomerular filtration rate . It can be calculated as: GFR = NFP x K f . The filtration coefficient (K f ) depends on the permeability and surface area of the filtration membrane and can be considered a constant in a healthy individual. Net filtration pressure (NFP) takes into account the different pressures found in the glomerulus. NFP is the net of the glomerular capillary pressure (pressure of the blood in the capillaries driving fluid and solutes out of the blood) minus the forces driving fluid and solutes into the blood (capsular pressure and osmotic pressure). Effects of GFR Abnormalities Generally, capsular and osmotic pressure are constant while blood pressure can change dramatically, altering GFR. Deregulated GFR will alter the amount of filtrate and urine produced. A higher GFR increases urine output which can lead to dehydration and electrolyte depletion.
