Introduction to Human Reproduction Introduction The human reproductive system is the only organ system that is not required for the survival of an individual. It is, however, required for the survival of the species. An argument can be made that every other body system maintains homeostasis in order to enable the reproductive system to carry out its single function: to procreate . The Essence of Sex Each cell in our body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 individual chromosomes). 22 of these pairs are called autosomes while the remaining pair are known as the sex chromosomes. Gametes contain half the normal chromosomal complement (22 autosomes and one sex chromosome). Male gametes contain 22 unpaired autosomes and either an X or Y sex chromosome. All ova carry X sex chromosomes. Therefore, it is the male gamete that determines the sex of the offspring (see Figure 1).
