Staying current in nursing practice is a critical component of professional development. Staying current in our profession can mean a lot of different things. It can mean career advancement, in which we seek promotions and positions that elevate our responsibilities. It can also involve attending continuing education opportunities that bring us up to date on the latest technology, techniques, and ways to practice ().The Future of Nursing: IOM report states, “The Future of Nursing. Leading Change, Advancing Health, is a thorough examination of how nurses’ roles, responsibilities, and education should change to meet the needs of an aging, increasingly diverse population and to respond to a complex evolving health system. The recommendations in the report focus on the critical intersection between the health needs of patients across the lifespan and the readiness of the nursing workforce” (The Future Of Nursing IOM Report/Campaign For Action). The Four Messages Outlined in the IOM report and its significance in Nursing Practice1.Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. The IOM reports states that “nurses have great potentials to lead modern strategies to improve the health care system.” The finding shows that the health care industry is not tappinginto nurses’ potentials, and nurses are not practicing to the full expectations due to thevariety of barriers that includes: 1, Regulatory and policy hurdle. 2, Fragmentation of the health care system. 3 High rates of turnover among nurses. 3 Difficulties for nurses moving from school to practice. 4 An aging workforce and other demographic challenges ().2
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING PROFESSIONALSNurses should strive to higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic program: As patient care becomes more complicated, including the use of evidence-based care, information management systems, and anincreased team strategies, the report calls for nurses to obtain skills in leadership, health policy, system developments among other areas. The IOM proved that the majority of nurses in the United States are less than those with a bachelor's degree. To improve the quality of nursing education, seamless transition into training that provides higher degrees needed to develop.
