May 20, 2006                                                                    APSNW                                                                                                Henry Lubatti 4 LHC LHC is a 7 TeV proton accelerator/storage ring 27 Km circumference,50 to 175 m underground pp collisions at 14 TeV cm energy Two multipurpose detectors: CMS and ATLAS Two “smaller” experiments LHCb designed to study b-physics ALICE designed for heavy ion collision physics Two beams with 2808 bunches each At full design luminosity 1.15×10 11 protons per bunch (order 10 14 protons/beam) Beams 16 mm, transverse, at collision Total beam energy is 334 MJ - about 120 kg TNT 1232 dipole magnets each 14.3 m long provide 8.4 Tesla field, 11.7 KA and total stored energy of 11GJ One beam crossing every 25 ns with with gaps in bunches gives about 32 MHz crossing rate and 19 collisions per crossing at peak design luminosity or 600 million inelastic event per second
