November 17, 2011 Henry Lubatti Physics 433 – Lecture 7 General information for completing labs If you have missed a lab and need to make it up next Monday through Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30 is available. I have received replies from some of you regarding makeup labs but several have not replied and have not submitted one or more of the first three labs. If you need to makeup a lab and HAVE NOT responded you MUST let us know which lab and which afternoons next week you can come in to do the missed lab. Our goal is to pair up those who need to makeup the same lab so that the work will be easier for you YOU MUST COMPLETE AND SUBMIT ALL 7 LAB REPORTS TO PASS THE CLASS

Physics 433 – Lecture 7 Cathode Strip Read-Out Chambers Used in both CMS and ATLAS at the CERN LHC In both CMS and ATLAS they are used in the forward (endcap) muon spectrometers CMS uses only Cathode strip read-out for the forward muon system ATLAS uses Cathode Strip read-out for only the most forward region (closest to the proton beams) of the endcap muon system Read-out is based on charged induced on the segmented cathode (cathode strips) that lie below the anode wire Width of the segmentation is typically the anode-cathode distance The Charge is induced on several adjacent cathode strips Measuring the total charge collected on each strip (ADC) and the weighted mean gives a position (<x>= Q i x i / Q i ) November 17, 2011 Henry Lubatti Review
