Gene Pool : the total aggregate of genes in a population at any one time. Species may consist of a single population. However, most species have multiple, geographically isolated populations that experience varying degrees of genetic exchange over evolutionarily relevant time periods (thousands of generations). What about genetic variation in Nature? Two migratory populations of Caribou in Alaska/Yukon However, the total geographic range of caribou encompasses a number of distinct Holarctic populations that are geographically & reproductively isolated to varying degrees. They may show phenotypic distinctions and often have informal names.
