Extracellular matrix (ECM) composed of collagen, proteoglycans, adhesive glycoproteins, and integrin. 2) cellular co-ordination effected by: secreted molecules that act as chemical messengers (hormones); plasma-membrane bound messenger molecules; electric coupling of cells via gap junctions and/or nerve axons.
