Running head: MODELS OF ABNORMALITY Benchmark Assignment: Models of AbnormalityGrand Canyon University: PSY- 470 August 27, 20171
MODELS OF ABNORMALITY Models of AbnormalityIntroduction Abnormal psychology is the scientific study of dysfunctional behavior. Before the scientific study of abnormality humans believed that evil spirits, full moons, and demonic spirits were responsible for mental disorders (Range, 2013). In today's modern times the explanation of abnormality falls into three categories: cultural, psychological, and medical such as the restriction of full development, unconscious inappropriate learning, and maladaptive thoughts (Range, 2013). The medical model holds that mental disorders are physical in nature, but take on psychological appearances. However, the psychological model believes that mental disorders are a result of past and present experiences that create inner conflicts that block growth and achievements (Range, 2013). The cultural model states that sociocultural experiences create abnormalities. In this paper abnormal behavior will be explained through the biological, psycho dynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic-existential, sociocultural, and psychopathology perspective in order to demonstrate their purpose and usage in abnormal behavior. Biological The biological model explains abnormal behavior as a direct defect or malfunction of brain matter that control thoughts and feelings. Typically, problems in behavior are pointed to thebrain's chemistry and anatomy. The brain is made up of neurons that include the cerebrum, corpus callosum, basal ganglia, hippocampus, and the amygdala (Comer, 2018). One specific disorder known as the hunting disease causes involuntary moving, suicidal thoughts, and memory loss which is linked to cell loss in the basal ganglia. Biological researchers have also noted that abnormal behavior can be the direct result of delayed transmission from neuron to neuron (Comer, 2018). The two sources of biological abnormalities are linked to evolution and genetics (King, 2013). Genes are chromosomes inherited from both parents that make up an 2

Scientifically, genes determined a person's height, stature, and color eyes however, genes also produce reactions that are both dysfunctional and functional. The three leading treatments for biological abnormalities is psychosurgery, drug therapy, and brain stimulation (King, 2013). In the 1950’s scientist discovered psychotropic medications that help affect emotions dealing with mental disorders (Comer, 2018). Such as antidepressant drugs that help people improve from their depression and other disorders, anti-bipolar drugs that stabilized moods caused by depression and hysteria, and antipsychotic drugs that help reduce hallucinations and delusions among patients who suffer from schizophrenia and other illnesses.
