1. Mercury         The swiftest planet (takes only 88 days), small (only slightly larger than the moon,  dense, temperature 427C to  173 (600C degree variation). Mariner 10 showed a  topography very similar to the moon. It is probably layered like Earth and its geologic  history is probably similar to that of the moon.       2. Venus        Earth's sister planet. Mapped by radar and visited by Russian probes. Has a dense  atmosphere 480 degrees centigrade, 90 times the atmospheric pressure of Earth and  composed mostly of carbon dioxide (97%).        Radar mapping shows a cratered surface made of volcanoes and extensive plains. It  is probably layered like Earth and may be in the stage of a primitive Earth.       3. Mars        Thin atmosphere (1%) of Earth. Winds blow up to 170 mph and dust storms can  persist for weeks. Has ice caps composed of water ice and carbon dioxide ice.
