Comets               a. Introduction               Believed composed of a small nucleus of frozen gases.             Comets have highly elongated orbits which can carry them beyond Pluto.                   Some of the material is volatilized as the comet approaches the sun to form  enormous tails. Comets are an enigma because they could not survive many of these  trips.   b. Halley's Comet               In 1705, Edmond Halley using Newton’s new universal law of gravitation  predicted that a comet that lit up London skies in 1682 would return every 76 years. It  did, although Halley and Newton were dead by then. Since then, this shortterm comet  which travels out to between the orbits of Neptune and Pluto has become the Peoples  Comet. It is a onceinalifetime event, eagerly awaited. Parents tell their children and
