UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Santa Barbara Electrical and Computer Engineering Department ECE 135 Spring 2010 Optical Fiber Communications This is a course covering the technologically important and rapidly developing fiber optic communications. In this course first we will focus on the sound understanding and limitations of transmission through the fiber. Then we will cover the physical principle of operation of basic communication components such as lasers, detectors, optical amplifiers and filters. Finally, we will introduce basic transmission systems, their design and performance limitations. Topics to be covered Optical fibers Transmission through optical fiber, dispersion, fiber non-linearities Optical sources and transmitters Optical detectors and receivers Optical amplifiers Transmission system design and performance Prerequisite: ECE 132 and 134 or equivalent or consent of the instructor.
