Since technology has been around for only a few decades, globalization is considered a relatively new phenomenon Globalization is a long-term phenomenon Gradual process that unfolds over time Deep historical roots for the current increase in economic & social interdependence and rise in global imaginary New technologies stand upon earlier innovations from 19 th to 20 th century Many of the innovations were contributed from China B. Humanity crosses thresholds Steger identifies 5 separate periods when humanity crosses certain distinct qualitative thresholds: 1. The prehistoric period Around 12,000 years ago, the human species achieved true global dispersal over the whole earth when hunter gatherers finally reached the tip of South America
