VALUE ALIGNMENT 2 Value Alignment Values are important and enduring beliefs or ideals about what is good or desirable and what is not. Values have a major influence on actions and behavior of an individual or organization and serve as broad guidelines in all situations (“Values”, 2012). Values can originate and evolve from many sources, change over time because of experience, and drive actions and behaviors. An organization’s stated values should align with its actual plans and actions and individual values should support the organization’s values. Kohl’s Corporation (Kohl’s), a department store chain headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, is an organization that strives to align personal and organizational values with its plans and actions. Origin and Evolution of Personal and Workplace Values Often one’s personal and workplace values can conflict. This is why many give the advice that individuals should choose careers that fit one’s needs. However, marrying a career with one’s personal values is often difficult to accomplish in an era when jobs are scarce and individuals seek employment anywhere because of desperation for a paycheck. It is very interesting to see what initiates the conflict or agreement in personal and workplace values. Personal values can originate from several sources. Personal values can come from one’s religious or lack of religious beliefs, moral beliefs, life experiences, observations, political views, and many other sources. Additionally, as one gets older and can make personal decisions, values can change with time and experiences. On the other hand, if one has a strong conviction to personal values, it is possible to hold on to those values despite life circumstances. According to Kohl’s (2012-2013), “Kohl's is a family-focused, value-oriented, specialty department store offering quality exclusive and national brand merchandise to the customer in an

Kohl’s is also committed to improving the health and educational opportunities for children in its communities and is dedicated to others in need (Kohl’s,
