January 19,2011 All colonies and states except Georgia started off with slavery 1793-Cotton Gin invented Highest percentage of slaves How many white owned slaves? 1 in 3 Georgia 1 in 4 everywhere else Civil War fought because of slavery Over half of slaves lived on plantations with other slaves Union fought because of secession slavery was profitable institution: 60% of world is cotton Who/What freed the slaves? 13 th amendment ratified in 1865 abolished and prohibited slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment of crime over time answer will change= slaves freed themselves Black men made up 10% of Union men 20,000 in navy Reconstruction American civil war=bloodiest war more people died in civil war than any other American war 650,000 died 1/5 of white men died post traumatic disease Politics when war ended, Abraham Lincoln didn't do much because he believed that the South never seceded. 10% plan (1863) Goal was to end the war. Plan never became because 5 days after, Lincoln got shot in Theater Radical Republicans: wanted to make it harder for South to join the Union.
