February 9, 2011 Progressivism political attitude favoring/ advocating changes or reform through governmental action response to industrialization Progressive movement while progressives share certain ideas, not all agree with all ideas, all have certain goals Made up of groups of reformers who all wanted to fix problems that created by rapid expanding urban industrial world began in Chicago, NY face poverish conditions improve schools, need for laws, regulate tenement housing, child and women labor->better working conditions had roots in 1890 devastation of depression in 1890 progressives were viewed as political heirs of populist reform society via government Generally started at grass root level many were college educated middle class white women majority of poor relief comes from private sources early 1900s, women ran charities political stand government and charity Sought to change city Hull Settlement House in Chicago(1889) model for other institutions helped immigrant families adapt to language and custom of America
